Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd(MAHB)에 따르면 페낭 국제공항은 이미 수용력이 초과 되었음을 시사하였다.
MAHB는 RM800mil 에서 RM900mil정도에 공항개발 프로젝트로 페낭 주정부로부터 승인을 받았다고 한다. 증감 규모는 기존 54,582sq m에서 113,005 sq m로 증가하며 12million 승객들을 연간 수용하며 추가적으로 25개의 여객기를 수용할 수 있을것으로 보인다. 주차수는 기존 1,218대에서 1,800대로 증가한다.
건설시작은 2020년 3월부터 진행예정이며 공사기간은 36개월이다.
공식적인 발표는 Penang Island City Council(MBPP)에서 발표할 예정이며 추가적으로 현재 분리되어있는 공항 Cargo를 통합하며 LRT연결도 고려하고 있는것으로 여겨짐.
