[INSIGHT] FDM 2026: Malaysia Food Market Trends and K-Food Opportunities

On July 22, PDS Consulting visited Food & Drinks Malaysia by SIAL (FDM) 2026, one of Malaysia’s leading B2B food and beverage trade exhibitions, held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur from July 21–23.

The visit provided us with an opportunity to observe not only the latest developments and emerging trends in Malaysia’s food and beverage market, but also the product characteristics, consumer preferences, and market-entry strategies that are attracting the attention of international buyers.

01. Food Exhibitions Are Moving Beyond Products to Experiences

One of the most noticeable trends at FDM 2026 was the growing emphasis on creating experiences around food products.

FDM 2026 was held concurrently with Chocolate Show 2026, featuring chocolate-related exhibitions alongside The Chocolate & Coffee Gourmet Bar, product demonstrations, tastings, and other programs designed to engage visitors through multiple senses.

Rather than simply explaining a product’s features, brands are increasingly focusing on letting consumers and buyers see, taste, and experience the product firsthand.

We also came across products that customized their cookie tin packaging according to the landmarks and cultural characteristics of different export markets.

This demonstrates how localization can go beyond the product itself. Packaging, storytelling, and the overall brand experience can all be adapted to create stronger relevance in each target market.

For Korean food companies, this means that successful overseas expansion may require more than exporting a product that performs well in Korea. Brands need to consider how their products can be presented and experienced in a way that resonates with local consumers.

02. Local Ingredients Are Creating New Product Categories

Another interesting observation from FDM 2026 was the way Malaysia’s abundant local ingredients are being transformed into diverse and premium food products.

Tropical fruits such as durian, jackfruit, and mangosteen were featured not only as fresh produce but also across a wide range of processed foods, sauces, snacks, desserts, and beverages.

Durian, in particular, has evolved beyond being simply a tropical fruit. It is being reinterpreted into ice cream, chocolate, pastries, beverages, and other premium products, creating new opportunities around a familiar local flavor.

This reflects the potential of combining familiar local tastes with new product formats as a market-entry strategy.

FDM 2026 also highlighted broader innovation trends including health-focused products, functional ingredients, upcycled snacks, and regionally rooted flavors.

For Korean companies, this suggests an opportunity to reinterpret Korean ingredients such as kimchi, yuzu, ginseng, and gochujang in formats that better match local tastes, consumption habits, and market expectations—rather than relying on Korean identity alone as a selling point.

03. The Growth of K-Food: From “Korean” to “Relevant to Local Consumers”

FDM 2026 also offered a valuable opportunity to observe how the growing global interest in K-Food is translating into real consumer and buyer engagement.

The Korea Pavilion featured a traditional Korean architectural concept inspired by tiled roofs, effectively communicating Korea’s cultural identity. A wide range of Korean food companies showcased products including tteokbokki, Korean-style hot dogs, dumplings, and Shine Muscat grapes.

Tasting activities allowed visitors to experience the products firsthand, demonstrating how K-Food brands can communicate their appeal through actual product experiences rather than simply displaying products on a booth.

However, one important takeaway is that the future competitiveness of K-Food in Malaysia will depend on more than the popularity of Korean culture. Korean food products need to translate cultural interest into actual purchase and distribution opportunities.

For sustainable growth in Malaysia, Korean food brands should consider a combination of:

① A distinct Korean identity,
② local taste preferences and product formats,
③ competitive pricing and distribution structures, and
④ local regulatory and certification requirements, including halal compliance.

Ultimately, the competitive landscape for overseas expansion is shifting from simply exporting products that are successful in Korea to developing products and brands that can be actively chosen, purchased, and distributed in the target market.

At PDS Consulting, we will continue to support Korean companies seeking opportunities in Malaysia and ASEAN through local market research, buyer sourcing and matching, export and distribution support, online and offline marketing, halal certification, and other market-entry solutions.

We look forward to helping more Korean brands turn their global ambitions into real business opportunities in Malaysia and across ASEAN.

PDS Consulting

[Insight] MIFB 2026: Global Product Innovation, Alternative Milk Shifts, and Frontend Restaurant Automation

Date: July 17, 2026

Location: KLCC, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Next Wave of F&B: MIFB 2026 Insights

PDS Consulting recently attended MIFB 2026 at KLCC, co-located with the Malaysia Cafe Expo (MCE) and MyFoodtech. The combined events highlighted a massive influx of international market entrants, a structural expansion of alternative milk bases in specialty coffee, and highly scalable frontend automated systems designed to combat ongoing operational challenges.

1. MIFB 2026: International Footprint & Halal Awareness

  • Global Exhibition Presence: Overseas manufacturers heavily led the trade fair, occupying roughly 80% of the exhibition halls. The floor was anchored by major national pavilions from China, Korea, Europe, Turkey, and India, with exhibitors primarily focusing on launching entirely new products rather than traditional market lines.
  • Halal Certification Integration: Halal certification has become a key requirement for entering the Malaysian market. Many international manufacturers participated with either completed or ongoing Halal certification, while local regulatory service providers showcased laboratory testing, food safety consulting, and Halal compliance solutions.
  • Organic Snack Innovation: Organic snacks emerged as one of the strongest product categories throughout the exhibition, with many brands positioning organic ingredients and clean-label concepts as their primary unique selling propositions (USPs).

2. MCE 2026: Next-Gen Cafe Formulations & Flavor Localization

  • Alternative Dairy Pivots: One of the key highlights at MCE was the expanding range of plant-based milk options for cafés. While oat milk remains popular, exhibitors introduced soy milk and coconut milk as alternative bases for specialty coffee beverages, providing café operators with greater menu flexibility.
  • Menu Innovation: Exhibitors introduced advanced blending formulations and new recipe frameworks designed to help cafe owners expand their menus and introduce higher-margin specialty drinks.
  • Local Flavor Integration: Regional flavors such as Durian and Pandan were increasingly incorporated into espresso-based beverages through syrups, toppings, and flavor infusions, reflecting growing consumer interest in localized café experiences.

3. MyFoodtech: Frontend Automation & Labor Mitigation

  • Operational Shift to Frontend Tech: Within the food technology section, international automated machinery specialists covered 75% of the hall. Beyond large-scale manufacturing equipment, considerable attention was given to automation solutions designed to improve day-to-day restaurant operations.
  • Digital Restaurant Infrastructure: Exhibitors heavily targeted the digitalization of standard food service operators, showcasing advanced self-service ordering systems and seamless automated food-serving pathways.
  • Manpower Reduction Modules: The primary goal across hardware tech lines was reducing operational manpower overheads. The introduction of commercial self-service rice dispensers stood out as a clear, high-ROI example of hardware designed to optimize front-of-house workflow without relying on manual labor.

Strategic Conclusion:

MIFB 2026 establishes that capturing the ASEAN F&B footprint requires a dual approach: delivering organic, value-certified products while equipping operators with immediate automation tech.

For international brands, leveraging high-grade dietary lines and combining them with regional automated modules—like localized serving setups—will serve as the prime gateway to capturing this fast-evolving consumer ecosystem.

PDS Consulting Supports Pilot Testing of Korean Agricultural Technology in Kelantan, Malaysia

PDS Consulting recently visited Kelantan, Malaysia, to conduct and support a pilot test assessing the local applicability of a Korean agricultural technology product.

Through this project, PDS Consulting introduced a Korean company’s rice seed germinator solution to local agricultural stakeholders and carried out a product presentation and on-site pilot test in collaboration with an agricultural institution in Kelantan. The test was conducted at PPK Puteri Saadong in Kelantan, within an actual rice farming environment, with a focus on verifying the equipment’s operating method and its potential applicability in the local market.

The rice seed germinator is designed to help rice seeds germinate in a more stable environment by consistently managing water temperature and oxygen supply. The pilot report also highlighted the device’s key functions, including maintaining a consistent temperature and improving germination conditions through oxygen supply. During the on-site test, the seed conditions and equipment operation were monitored at different time intervals.

The key significance of this project is that it went beyond simply introducing the product. It provided an opportunity to examine how Korean technology could actually be applied in Malaysia’s local agricultural environment. PDS Consulting directly supported the practical processes required during the early stage of market entry, including communication with local institutions, preparation of product introduction materials, presentation delivery, pilot test coordination, and collection of on-site feedback.

For Korean companies seeking to enter the Malaysian market, it is essential to understand not only product competitiveness, but also the local environment and actual usage conditions. This includes reviewing operating method, responses from local stakeholders, purchasing decision-making criteria, and overall market suitability. PDS Consulting supports this process through its local network and execution capabilities, helping Korean products localize and validate their market potential.

This Kelantan pilot project demonstrates PDS Consulting’s execution-focused consulting capabilities in connecting Korean companies with the Malaysian market across various sectors, including agriculture, food, beauty, technology, and industrial solutions. Moving forward, PDS Consulting will continue to provide practical market entry support, including local market research, institutional communication, pilot testing, and buyer sourcing, to help outstanding Korean products and technologies discover real opportunities in Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asian market.

PDS Consulting,

PDS Consulting
